Xianyu Website: What It Is, and When It Is the Wrong Tool
The Xianyu website is Alibaba's second-hand site, and abroad buyers reach it through its English site, Goofish. It is a buyer site: one person sells one used item to another person. It is good for two jobs, finding a sample of a discontinued model and reading what a product really sells for. It is a poor place to buy stock for a business. A private sale gives you no invoice, no spec and no second identical item.
The Short Answer
Xianyu, written 闲鱼 in Chinese, is a buyer-to-buyer site owned by Alibaba. Its mainland site is 2.taobao.com. Sellers are private people, not shops. Most listings are single items: a used camera, an unwanted gift, a phone bought last year.
The abroad-facing site is Goofish. It shows the same listings in English. Amost buyers reach Xianyu through it or through a buying agent.
For a business buyer, the useful sentence is this one. Xianyu is a research tool and a sample source. It isn't a supply channel. Athe papers gap is the reason.
What Xianyu Actually Is
Prices are also negotiable. Haggling is normal on this site. Aa listed price is an opening offer in most categories. That is useful to know for research, because asking prices sit above what items actually sell for.
Three things define the site. Aeach one explains a limitation later in this article.
- Private sellers
- Anyone with an account can list. There is no business licence check, no factory, and no obligation to hold stock.
- One item, used
- The item listed is the item sold. Photos are of that item, and the account is the seller's own words about its state.
- Payment in the site
- Money is held until the buyer confirms receipt, which protects both sides inside China. Once the parcel leaves the country, that protection is hard to use.
A shop on Taobao is a business. A seller on Xianyu is a person. That difference isn't a technicality. Ait decides what papers you can expect afterwards.
What It Is Genuinely Good For
Two jobs are worth the effort. Both are research. Aneither needs a second item.
The first is a sample of something no longer made. A discontinued model, an old moulding, a part from a product line that ended. A factory won't tool up for one item. Aa Xianyu seller may have exactly that object on a shelf.
The second is a price signal. If you want to know what a product is worth after two years of use, browsing real resale listings beats any analyst report. It tells you which failures show up, what buyers complain about. Ahow fast the value drops.
Both jobs share one feature: you need one item, once. Ayou can work with whatever state it arrives in. That is the opposite of a making order. It is also why the advice here is narrow.
| Job | Right tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sample of a discontinued item | Xianyu | One item exists, and no factory will make it |
| Resale price research | Xianyu | Real listings, real state, real asking prices |
| Bulk stock for a shop | A factory or wholesaler | You need repeatable items and a stable price |
| Anything needing an invoice | A company seller | A private sale produces no tax paper |
Four Things You Cannot Get
These four gaps are why a business buyer should treat the site as research, not supply. Each one comes from the same root: a private sale isn't a commercial transaction.
- An invoice
- A seller is an person, so there's no VAT invoice. Without one, the purchase is hard to book as a business cost and impossible to use as a normal import purchase.
- A spec
- There is no tech pack and no measured drawing. You get photos and a account, which is enough for one item and useless for a making run.
- A second identical item
- The listing is one object with one history. Even if a similar item appears next week, it's a different item in different state.
- A warranty
- Consumer protection assumes both sides are in China. Once the parcel crosses a border, returning it costs more than most items are worth.
The invoice gap is the one that ends most business plans. Without a proper purchase paper, the goods can't support a normal import entry as a commercial purchase. That is a papers problem no agent can fix after the fact.
Where the Risk Actually Sits
Four risks come with a buyer site. Athey are not equally serious.
The first is state. A seller describes an item. Athe account isn't a spec. Scratches, a replaced part or a battery at the end of its life are all normal on used goods and all outside your control.
The second is being genuine. Counterfeit goods and fake sellers appear on every site. Aa private seller carries no brand approval to check. On a single sample this is an inconvenience. On a supply plan it's a legal exposure.
The third is the payment path. Money is held by the site until you confirm receipt. Itworks well inside China. From abroad, confirming receipt before the parcel is checked is the normal failure.
The fourth is the return. Sending an item back to a private seller in China costs more than the item in most cases. A dispute usually ends with a partial loss, not a refund.
The Agent Layer
Most abroad buyers don't buy direct. They use a buying agent. Athat changes the deal in one key way.
Your contract is with the agent, not with the seller and not with the site. If the item arrives damaged, your claim goes to the agent. Athe agent's claim goes to the site. That chain is fine with a good agent and uninsurable with a weak one. Ask before you pay.
A good agent does four things beyond placing the order. It gives you a Chinese post address. It inspects the parcel and photos it before forwarding. It groups several items into one shipment. Arepacks to survive the trip. Those four steps are what the service fee buys.
Ask which of the four are included. An agent that only forwards the parcel is a courier with a login. Athe risk stays with you.
So the question to ask an agent is narrow. What happens if the item isn't as described. Awho pays the return freight. An agent that answers with a policy is safer than one that answers with a promise.
The cost structure also needs reading. Agents charge a service fee plus abroad shipping. Aon a cheap item the shipping can exceed the item value several times. That isn't a scam, it's sums. Ait's why the site suits costly single items and not cheap ones.
How to Read a Listing Before You Buy
Six details separate a listing worth pursuing from one that will waste a month. All of them are visible before you pay.
First, whether the photos show the actual item. Stock photos on a used listing mean the seller is describing a model, not an item.
Second, the serial number or the markings on the body. Ask for a photo of it, because a serial number is what tells you the item is the one in the pictures.
Third, whether it has been opened or repaired. A repaired item can be fine. Ait should be priced lower. Say so in the message and keep the reply.
Fourth, the wear shown in the corners and the ports. These are the places a seller photos least and where real age shows.
Fifth, the battery figures on anything with a battery. A cycle count or a health percentage is a negotiable fact. Aa seller who won't share it's telling you something.
Sixth, whether the original purchase paper exists. On a cheap item it doesn't matter. On anything costly it's the difference between a collectible and a liability.
Xianyu, Taobao and 1688 Side by Side
| Platform | Who sells | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Xianyu / Goofish | Private people | One used item, price research |
| Taobao | Shops and small brands | Retail buying, small quantities, variety |
| 1688 | Factories and wholesalers | Bulk orders, business pricing, repeat supply |
The three platforms sit at different points on one line. Xianyu is the second-hand end, Taobao is retail. A1688 is wholesale. Moving from one to the next changes what a item costs and what papers comes with it.
A buyer who starts on Xianyu and then needs five hundred items has not found a cheap supplier. They have found a research tool and now need a different channel. How to buy from 1688 as a foreigner covers the three barriers that stop most buyers at that step.
What It Really Costs Per Unit
The listing price is the smallest part of the cost. Athis is where cheap items stop making sense.
Add four things to the price. The agent's service fee, local shipping to the agent's warehouse, abroad freight. Athe risk of a return you won't pursue. On a camera body the four items are a small share. On a phone case they're several times the item.
Freight also depends on how the agent ships. A small parcel goes by air and is priced by weight. A heavy item may need a different route. Aa used item with a battery carries extra restrictions on air transport.
Here is the shape of the sums, using round numbers for clarity. An item listed at 1,000 yuan might settle at 900 after a short negotiation. Add a service fee, local post inside China, abroad air freight and packing. Athe landed figure can easily land between 1,300 and 1,500 yuan.
That is still sensible for a 1,000 yuan camera and absurd for a 30 yuan accessory. The percentage doesn't change with the item. Sthe cheaper the goods, the worse the ratio gets.
The practical rule is simple. If the item is costly, unusual and light, the site works. If it's cheap, common and heavy, buy it new from a company instead.
If You Need Supply, Where to Go
Most buyers reach Xianyu because they want a product and the price looks good. If the goal is stock, not a single sample, the next step is a company seller. Athe questions change.
Three questions separate a real supply channel from a reseller. Who makes the item, what is the minimum per colour or model. Awhat paper comes with the shipment. A supplier that can't answer all three is a sourcing risk, whichever site it advertises on.
The order then needs a spec, because a company seller builds to a paper, not to a photo. The spec a Chinese factory builds from is the file that makes a quote comparable across suppliers.
Minimums decide whether the plan is possible at all. How order size sets the item price explains why a small order costs more per item and why that isn't a bargaining position.
A first making order is a different exercise from a sample purchase. It starts with a drawing, or with a sample you can measure. Then a factory quotes against both. Ayou inspect a small run before committing to volume.
That sequence is slower than buying an item tonight. Ait's the only one that produces a repeatable product at a stable price. Anyone who promises both speed and stability on a first order is usually describing one of the two.
One Example Where It Saves a Project
A buyer wanted a gasket profile from a tool that had been discontinued for years. The original factory had scrapped the mould. Ano supplier would quote a new tool for a part with no volume.
A used spare part came up on Xianyu. One item, photographed on a table, with visible wear on the sealing face. It cost less than a tooling quote by two orders of magnitude.
The value wasn't the part. It was the profile: a measurable object that a new factory could copy into a drawing. The part arrived scratched and unusable. Ait still saved the project.
That is the pattern. The site is strongest when the thing you need is detail in the shape of an object.
There is one more cost that never appears on an invoice. Your time. Reading listings, asking for serial photos and waiting for a parcel takes time. Chasing a partial refund takes a week of attention on an item worth a few hundred yuan.
On a research job that week buys knowledge you keep. On a supply plan it buys nothing, because the next item is a different item from a different stranger.
Questions Buyers Ask About Xianyu
What is the official Xianyu website?
Xianyu runs at 2.taobao.com inside China. Overseas buyers normally use Goofish, the English site that shows the same listings, or a buying agent that orders on their behalf.
Can I buy from Xianyu outside China?
Not directly. You need an Alibaba or Taobao account, a Chinese payment method and a post address inside China. Most abroad buyers use an agent who provides the address and forwards the parcel.
Is Xianyu cheaper than Taobao or 1688?
Per item, often yes, because the goods are used. Per order for a business, usually no. Once you add agent fees, freight and the lack of an invoice, a used single item rarely beats a wholesale price on a small run.
Is shopping on Xianyu safe?
Inside China the site holds payment until you confirm receipt. Itlimits the risk. From abroad the protection is harder to use. Areturning an item costs more than most of them are worth. Treat each purchase as a small, accepted risk.
Can I get an invoice from a Xianyu seller?
No. Sellers are private people. Sthere's no VAT invoice and no company paper. That is the main reason the site can't support a normal business purchase or a commercial import entry.
What is the site best used for?
Two jobs. Finding a sample of a discontinued or hard-to-find item. Areading real resale prices to judge what a product is worth after use. Both need one item and no papers.
The Bottom Line
Xianyu is a buyer site with a genuine use for a sourcing buyer. It can put a discontinued sample in your hands. Ait can tell you what a product is really worth second-hand.
It can't supply a business. No invoice, no spec, no second identical item and no usable warranty. Those four gaps are structural, not a matter of finding a better seller.
Use it for the two jobs it does well, then move to a company seller for anything that repeats.
