What Is 4PX Shipping? A Parcel Network With a Hard Ceiling

4PX is a Chinese cross-border parcel company. It collects small shipments in China, flies them out, and hands them to a local carrier for the last mile. That handover is why tracking can go quiet for days while the parcel is still moving. The number that matters is its ceiling: the general express service stops at 30 kg, and the registered-mail lanes stop at 2 to 3 kg. Above that weight, 4PX is not an option, and the question changes from “how long” to “which freight mode”.

A parcel network is built around a weight limit, not around a container.

Four facts answer most 4PX questions.

What 4PX actually is

4PX is a logistics provider built for cross-border e-commerce parcels. It runs collection in China, sorting at its own hubs, and the international flight, then uses partner carriers abroad.

Amazon lists it as a carrier for Buy Shipping and publishes its own summary. Founded in 2004, more than 10,000 employees, more than 100 branches, service to over 200 countries, and a stated volume above 10 million parcels a day.

Read that volume against your own order. Ten million parcels a day is a network that moves small things in bulk. Nothing about that model is designed for a pallet, and nothing about it pretends to be.

This is why the answer to “what is 4PX” is short and the answer to “should I use 4PX” is not. The company is real and large. The product is narrow.

Where it sits in the chain

A parcel from China to a buyer in Europe passes through four hands. The supplier packs it. 4PX collects it and moves it to an airport or a hub. A partner airline carries it. A local postal or courier company delivers it.

Your tracking number follows the parcel through the first three. At the fourth, the number often changes, and the original number stops updating. That is the handover, and it is normal.

The weight ceiling is the product

Amazon publishes 4PX’s shipping methods with a weight limit for each country. Those limits are the most useful facts on the whole subject, because they decide whether you can use the service at all.

The general express service allows 0 to 30 kg to Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. The same service allows 0 to 20 kg to Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain, Czechia and Poland.

The registered-mail lanes are far lower. Priority Registered Mail allows 0 to 3 kg to the UK, Italy and France, and 0 to 2 kg to the United States. The standard registered lane allows 0 to 3 kg to the UK, Spain, Austria and the US, and 0 to 2 kg to a long list of European countries.

ServiceWeight limitTypical use
Global Express Standard0 to 30 kg, 20 kg on some countrysSmall commercial orders
Priority Registered Mail0 to 3 kg, or 0 to 2 kg to the USSamples and single units
Standard Registered Mail0 to 3 kg, or 0 to 2 kg in much of EuropeRoutine e-commerce parcels
Economic Registered Mail0 to 3 kg in Germany, 0 to 2 kg in the UKLow-value goods

Two consequences follow. A 40 kg carton cannot go by 4PX at all, whatever the quote says. And a 25 kg carton can go, but only on a lane that allows 30 kg, not through a registered-mail service.

Batteries are the second filter. Amazon lists three classes: no battery, internal battery, and external battery, with one route also accepting lithium cells under a specific packing instruction. A product with an external battery narrows the lane list quickly.

Fully tracked and semi-tracked lanes

Not every 4PX service shows the same detail. Amazon’s table marks each method as fully tracked or semi-tracked, and one economic lane is semi-tracked.

The distinction is simple. A fully tracked parcel gets a scan at each stage, so you see it leave the hub, board the flight and arrive. A semi-tracked parcel gets fewer scans, so a gap in the record is expected, not alarming.

This matters when you are deciding whether a parcel is lost. On a fully tracked lane, ten quiet days is a reason to ask. On a semi-tracked lane, it is not evidence of anything.

Check which lane you bought before you open a claim. The service name on the label tells you, and a claim opened against a semi-tracked lane usually closes as “no scan is not a loss”.

Why the tracking page goes quiet

Almost every 4PX concern traces back to one of four ordinary moments. None of them is a lost parcel.

The label exists but nothing has moved. The seller printed the label and has not handed the parcel over. The record says the shipment information was received, and then nothing follows, because there is nothing to follow.

The parcel is at the airport. It has left the China hub and is waiting for space. On a budget lane this wait can be several days, and the record does not change while it happens.

Customs has it. The parcel has landed and is waiting for release. A vague description, a value that does not match the invoice, or a missing code will hold a parcel. Otherwise it would clear in hours.

The parcel changed hands. The local carrier has it and is tracking it under a different number. The original page will not update again.

Work backwards from the last scan, not forwards from today. The last status tells you which of the four you are in, and each one has a different next step.

The two checks that resolve most cases

First, ask the seller for the handover scan. If there is no handover scan, the parcel never entered the network, and the problem is with the seller, not the carrier.

Second, once the status says the parcel has been handed over, search the same number on the local carrier’s site. If a new number exists there, use it from that point on.

What the rate card leaves out

The price you see when you buy a label is not always the price you pay. Amazon states this plainly for 4PX: the rate card covers base shipping fees only.

Everything else appears on the 4PX bill. Return processing, oversize handling, overweight handling, re-shipping, remote-area surcharges and taxes are listed as separate items.

Amazon also notes that the cost shown in Buy Shipping is only a guide. The actual cost follows the quotation and billing of the 4PX account.

For a seller this is a cash-flow question, not a philosophical one. If you price a product on the base rate and the parcel is oversize, the margin on that order is gone.

Two habits prevent it. Weigh and measure the packed parcel before you buy the label, not the product. And keep a balance in the 4PX account, because 4PX charges when the parcel is collected or dropped at the warehouse.

A worked case: 120 phone cases

A supplier quotes 120 phone cases at 80 grams each. The packed weight is the only number that decides the mode, and nobody has weighed it yet.

Do the arithmetic before the label. One hundred and twenty units at 80 grams is 9.6 kg of product. Add a carton, filler and a label, and the parcel leaves at about 11 kg.

At 11 kg the parcel line fits easily. It sits well under the 30 kg express ceiling and under every registered-mail ceiling too. A forwarder is the wrong call at this size, because the fixed costs alone would exceed the postage.

Now the second order. The buyer doubles the quantity and adds a display carton. The packed weight lands at 24 kg, still inside the express ceiling, but only inside it.

One more change breaks it. A 32 kg parcel cannot go on the express service for the United States, Germany or Japan. The ceiling is 20 kg on some of those lanes. The mode changes, and so does all of it downstream.

This is why the weight ceiling is the fact to check first. It does not matter how good the rate looks on a lane that cannot take your carton.

What the switch costs you in time

A parcel moves in days. A freight shipment moves in weeks, because it waits for a container to fill and then for a vessel.

The switch also adds paperwork. An entry, a broker, and for US ocean cargo an ISF filed before loading. None of that exists on a parcel label.

Plan the change before it happens. A product line that grows by a few kilograms a month will cross 30 kg within a year. The buyer who plans for that does not lose a season.

When a parcel line stops being the right tool

Thirty kilograms is not just a technical limit. It is also the point where the price per kilogram is at its worst. A parcel line charges for handling that a pallet does not need.

Below 30 kg, the parcel network wins on almost all of it. No minimum, door to door, customs inside the price, and a tracking number the buyer can follow.

Between 30 and 500 kg, air freight takes over. It is priced per chargeable kilogram, and the per-kilogram rate falls as the weight rises. That is the opposite of a parcel tariff, which is why the two curves cross.

Above 500 kg, or above about one cubic metre, sea LCL becomes the cheaper answer unless the deadline is short. It is slower by weeks and it adds handling at both ends, but the price per kilogram drops sharply.

Which product fits which weight.

CargoProductWhat you are buying
Under 30 kg4PX or a courierHandling, with customs inside the price
30 to 500 kgAir freightChargeable kilograms, priced per kg
About 1 cbm and upSea LCLSpace in a shared container
15 cbm and upSea FCLA whole container

The crossover is not a published rule. It moves with the lane, the season and the fuel surcharge. Price both ends of your range before you commit to one mode for a product line.

The mode choice is only half of it. A FCL or LCL decision changes how long your cargo waits for a container to fill, and that wait is often longer than the sailing.

If you are buying for a business

A business buyer faces a different question from a consumer. The consumer asks whether the parcel will arrive. The business asks whether the parcel line is the right product for the volume it is now buying.

Samples and first orders belong on a parcel line. It is cheap, it is fast, and it tells you whether the supplier packs properly. There is no reason to book freight for two cartons.

Once an order passes 30 kg, parcel lines stop working, and above 100 kg they stop being economical even where they are allowed. That is the moment to move to an air forwarder, and later to LCL.

The paperwork changes at the same time. A parcel line clears goods inside its own process. A freight shipment needs an entry. The entry needs a broker who files the entry, and for US ocean imports an ISF before loading.

Packaging changes too. A parcel is handled as a parcel. A pallet is handled by forklift, stacked, and often loaded twice. The export packaging checklist covers what has to change before you make that switch.

MODE CHECK

Has your order outgrown a parcel line?

Send the packed weight, the carton size and where it has to go. We will say whether a parcel line still fits. If it does not, we will price air and LCL for the same goods, so you can compare like for like.

Check my weight

What to send instead, by weight

Once a parcel is out, the choice is narrow and the answer is decided by two numbers: the weight and the deadline.

Between 30 and 100 kg, a courier express account is often the simplest answer. It costs more per kilogram than an air forwarder. But it takes the carton door to door and clears customs as part of the service.

Between 100 and 500 kg, an air forwarder becomes cheaper. It prices per chargeable kilogram, it consolidates several shippers into one air waybill, and it needs a broker at the far end.

Above 500 kg, price the sea options before you book air. The gap in cost per kilogram is wide enough that most buyers can absorb the extra weeks by planning one order ahead.

Above one cubic metre, ask for LCL and a full container in the same email. On a small volume the two answers are often closer than buyers expect, and the container removes the shared-load risk.

The two numbers to write down first

Before you email any provider, weigh the packed carton and measure it. Not the product, and not the carton the supplier quoted from a catalogue.

Those two figures decide the mode, the price and the paperwork. A supplier who quotes a shipping weight from memory is quoting a guess, and the guess is usually low.

Questions about 4PX

Is 4PX a real shipping company?

Yes. It was founded in 2004 and Amazon lists it as a carrier for Buy Shipping. It handles the China side and the international leg, then a partner carrier delivers in the country country.

How long does 4PX take to deliver?

It depends on the service. Express lanes run in days, and budget registered lanes run in weeks. Add days for remote addresses, peak season and any customs review. Treat the estimate as a band, not a date.

Why is my 4PX tracking number not updating?

Usually one of four things. The seller has not handed the parcel over. It is waiting at the airport. Customs has it. Or a local carrier has taken it and is tracking it under a different number.

Can I send a 40 kg carton by 4PX?

No. The published ceiling on the general express service is 30 kg, and it is 20 kg on several countrys. Registered-mail lanes are lower still, at 2 to 3 kg. Above the ceiling the cargo moves to air freight.

Who pays if a 4PX parcel is lost?

The claim runs through whoever bought the service, which is usually the seller, because the seller holds the contract. Ask the seller to open the claim and to supply the handover scan.

Can a business open a 4PX account directly?

Yes, business accounts exist, and Amazon documents the registration and account binding for sellers. For regular imports at volume, a forwarder still tends to price better, because volume is not the same as monthly value.

The same cost logic runs one step earlier, before any label is bought. The cost stack behind an Alibaba order shows where the shipping line sits next to unit price and duty.
