Two cities make most of the world’s toys, and they work in completely different ways. Yiwu gives you speed and small quantities. Shantou gives you factory discipline and custom molds. Pick the wrong one and you either miss the trend or blow your budget on a mold you did not need.

What Yiwu is good at
Yiwu is not really a factory city. It is the world’s largest wholesale market — a building complex so big that walking every stall would take you months. Around it sit thousands of small workshops and trading offices.

When a shape goes viral, Yiwu has it within weeks. Information moves fast, copies appear fast, and you can buy 200 pieces to test the market instead of committing to 10,000.
Yiwu also solves a problem no factory can: mixing products. If you need squishy toys, keychains, stationery and party goods in one container, you can buy all of it within a few square kilometres and ship it together.
Yiwu’s real advantage is risk. You can test five shapes at 200 pieces each for under $1,000, find the one that sells, then scale it properly. That beats guessing right the first time — and most buyers do not guess right the first time.
The weakness of Yiwu is quality control. Many sellers are traders who buy from workshops they do not control. When something goes wrong, they may not be able to fix it — they can only apologise and offer a discount on the next order.
What Shantou is good at
Shantou, in Guangdong province, is a genuine toy manufacturing base. Its Chenghai district is often described as the toy capital of China, packed with real factories running injection moulding, tooling and assembly lines.

If you want your own shape, your own colour, your logo moulded into the toy, and the same result on order five as on order one, this is where that happens. Shantou factories are also more used to third-party audits, which matters if you supply a large retailer.
Shantou is slower on trends. A factory geared for 20,000-piece runs will not stop the line to make 300 pieces of a shape that went viral last week. If speed to market is your edge, this is the wrong door to knock on.
Trader or factory? How to tell in one conversation
Both cities have both types. The label matters less than knowing which one you are talking to — a good trader beats a bad factory. Use these questions:
- “Which machines do you run for this item?” A factory names the process. A trader talks about “our production partner”.
- “Can I video-call from the production floor tomorrow?” A factory says yes. A trader needs to arrange a visit.
- “What is your minimum for a colour change?” A factory knows the exact number. A trader has to check.
- “What can you not do?” A factory names real limits. A trader says everything is possible.

The buyers who do this well do not choose one city forever. They use each for what it does best, in sequence.
Stage 1 — Test in Yiwu
Buy 200–500 pieces each of three or four shapes from stock. Total spend is small. Sell them and watch which one moves.
Stage 2 — Confirm the winner
Reorder the best seller in larger quantity, still in Yiwu. Add simple branding — a sticker or header card. You now have real sales data and no tooling cost.
Stage 3 — Scale in Shantou
Take the proven shape to a Shantou factory. Now a mold makes sense, because you know the demand exists. Unit price drops, quality gets more consistent, and you can add proper retail packaging.
This sequence turns your first orders into paid market research. The buyers who lose money are the ones who reverse it — a $2,500 mold and a 10,000-piece run for a shape nobody has bought yet.
Visiting each city
Yiwu
The market is open to visitors and easy to reach — a 28-minute bullet train from Hangzhou or about an hour from Shanghai. Toys sit mainly in District 2 and District 3. Two full days will cover the relevant sections if you plan your route.
Shantou
Shantou is a factory visit, not a market walk. You arrange appointments in advance, and you will likely see three or four factories in a day with a driver. Fly into Jieyang Chaoshan (SWA) airport.

Is Yiwu or Shantou cheaper for toys?
Shantou is cheaper per unit at volume because you buy from the factory. Yiwu is cheaper in total for small orders, since you avoid mold fees and high minimums. Under about 3,000 pieces, Yiwu usually wins on landed cost.
Can I get custom toys made in Yiwu?
Light customisation, yes — logo stickers, hangtags, printed boxes, colour changes on existing shapes. Full custom molds are better handled in Shantou, where the tooling and engineering capability actually sits.
What is the minimum order in Yiwu market?
Often one carton, which can be 10 to 500 pieces depending on the item. Some stalls sell single samples. This is the main reason first-time importers and small retailers start in Yiwu.
