Most size guides tell you to “add one or two sizes.” That advice is what fills your returns shelf. Asian garments are not just smaller — they are cut to a different shape. This guide gives you the real charts, the factory tolerance numbers, and the listing fixes that actually cut returns.

Why “just add two sizes” fails
Apparel has the worst return rate in e-commerce. Industry data for 2026 puts clothing returns at 20–40%, against about 20% for online retail overall. Fit is the number one reason.
So sellers reach for a simple rule: Asian sizes run small, add two. It sounds right. It fails because it only fixes one of three problems.
Sizing up solves problem 1 and ignores problems 2 and 3. That is why the complaints keep coming even after you “fixed” the chart.
How Chinese size labels actually work
Chinese garments follow a national standard called GB/T 1335. The label looks like a fraction:
165/88A means: fits a body 165 cm tall, with an 88 cm bust or chest, in body type A.
The letter at the end is the body type. It tells you the drop — the gap between chest and waist:

This system is more precise than US alpha sizing, because it states real body numbers instead of a letter. The catch: it describes the body, not the finished garment. Two factories can cut very different shirts for the same 165/88A body.
US apparel uses ASTM inch-based standards with alpha (S/M/L) or numeric (0, 2, 4) codes. Those describe garment sizes by convention, not a stated body measurement. The two systems are not translations of each other — which is exactly why a pure label-to-label chart can never be perfect.

The shoulder column is the one to watch. Bust width can be forgiving on a knit top; shoulder width cannot. If your sample’s shoulder seam is more than 2 cm narrower than the US equivalent, the garment will feel tight no matter what the bust says.

Notice the men’s chart shifts by roughly one full size, not two. Menswear grading is closer between the two markets than womenswear. If you apply a blanket “add two sizes” rule to men’s shirts, you will ship garments that are too big — and oversized returns are just as expensive as tight ones.
Shoes — convert from millimetres
Chinese footwear is graded by foot length in millimetres. That number is stable across factories, unlike the printed size. Always ask for the mm value.

Asian shoe lasts have a wider toe box and a higher arch than US and European lasts. A customer with narrow feet who orders by length alone will find the shoe loose across the front. Say so on the listing.

Asian kidswear is sized by the child’s height in centimetres. US kidswear is sized by age. Age is a poor proxy — two eight-year-olds can differ by 15 cm. List the height range on every kids’ product page and returns drop immediately.

Cup letters match up to D. Above D the systems split: China continues E, F, G while the US switches to DD, DDD. This single gap causes a large share of lingerie returns.
How to measure a sample in 10 minutes
Flat measurement is the only number you can defend to a customer. Lay the garment on a flat table, smooth it out, close all buttons and zips, and do not stretch the fabric.
Measure three pieces of the same size, not one. Take the average and note the spread. If three “L” shirts vary by more than 2 cm in chest, you have a production consistency problem — and you found it before your customers did.
Factory tolerance: the number nobody tells you
This is the part missing from every consumer size guide, and it is where sellers lose money.
Chinese apparel factories work to a production tolerance — an accepted margin of error on every measurement. Standard practice is ±2–3 cm. Nobody mentions it unless you ask.
Do the arithmetic. If your approved sample has a 96 cm chest and the factory works to ±3 cm, your bulk order can legitimately ship anywhere from 93 cm to 99 cm. That 6 cm spread is a full size grade. Your customers receive garments labelled “L” that range from a snug M to a loose XL — and every complaint is technically within spec.
Write the tolerance into your purchase order. Reasonable, achievable numbers:

Put one sentence in the PO: “Measurement deviation on key points (chest, shoulder, length) must not exceed ±1 cm for woven and ±2 cm for knit. Out-of-tolerance pieces are rejected at inspection.” Naming the specific points matters — “key points” alone is too vague to enforce.
Listing fixes that actually cut returns
1. Publish numbers, not letters
Never upload the factory’s size image straight to your product page. Build your own chart from your own measurements, in both inches and centimetres. US shoppers think in inches; your factory works in centimetres. Show both and neither side has to convert.
2. Add a model reference line
One sentence under the chart does more than the chart itself:
“Model is 5’9″ (175 cm), 150 lb, normally wears US 8 — shown here in size L for a relaxed fit.”
This works because shoppers compare themselves to a person, not to a table. It costs nothing to add.
3. State the cut in plain words
Tell the buyer which shape they are getting, before they order:
- Asian slim cut: “Cut close to the body. If you prefer a relaxed fit, order one size up.”
- US-adjusted cut: “Standard US relaxed fit. Order your usual size.”
4. Kill “One Size”
Most Asian “free size” or “one size” garments fit roughly 155–165 cm frames, which is around US S–M. If you must list them, publish the flat bust and waist numbers and state the height range. A shopper who knows it will not fit simply does not order — and a lost sale is far cheaper than a return.
5. Ask the factory to print dual labels
For private label orders, have the inner label carry both the US alpha size and the cm measurements. Cost is a few cents per piece. It removes the single most common post-delivery complaint: “the tag says L but it fits like a small.”

The last one catches experienced sellers. A factory changes fabric supplier or re-draws a pattern to save material, and your second production run fits differently from the first — with identical labels. Measure every run.
Frequently asked questions
Is Asian XL the same as US M?
For women’s slim-cut tops, roughly yes — Asian XL (170/92A) lands near US 10, which is a US M to L. But the shoulder and sleeve will still run 2–4 cm shorter than a true US M. For menswear the shift is smaller: Asian XL sits close to US L. Always confirm against the flat chest measurement rather than the letter.
Why do two factories label the same shirt “L” with different measurements?
Because GB/T 1335 describes body dimensions, not finished garment dimensions. Each factory draws its own pattern around that body. A Zhejiang knitwear L can measure 4–6 cm smaller in the chest than a Guangzhou woven L. This is why a generic conversion chart cannot replace measuring your own sample.
How much measurement variation do Chinese factories allow?
Standard practice is ±2–3 cm unless you negotiate otherwise. That means a 6 cm total spread on a single size, which is close to a full grade. Ask for ±1 cm on woven fabrics and ±2 cm on stretch knits, and state that out-of-tolerance pieces are rejected at inspection.
Should I print US size labels on imported apparel?
Yes, for the US market. Ask the factory to print the US alpha or numeric size alongside the cm measurements on the inner label. It costs a few cents per piece and removes the most common post-delivery complaint.
Why are Asian shoe conversions so inconsistent?
